Key Elements to Space Planning

The way that each space in our homes is planned out matters more than you think. If a room is off balance or functions poorly, it will cause unnecessary frustration for both you and your guests. It is especially important to take into consideration all the things that will contribute to the overall use of each room individually to create a relaxing & enjoyable space for years to come. Below are some key elements that go into space planning & how to avoid making the most common mistakes when purchasing furniture for a new home.

#1: Take Accurate Measurements

The first step is always to collect as much data as possible on the existing space or area in question. Make sure the measurements you take are 100% accurate, always remember the golden rule of design… Measure Twice, Shop Once! Trust me, when done correctly you will save yourself lots of time and money throughout the process.

#2: Visualize How You Want the Space to Function

Just like planning your dream vacation, you want to think ahead on how you plan on utilizing this space. How much time do you anticipate spending in this room? Is it your primary living area? Are you working in this space? Do you want to be able to entertain guests here? Will you be eating/drinking in this area? What spaces are adjacent to this room? Is this a high traffic zone or a more private quiet space? All of these things will play a factor in what type of furniture you invest in based on how each piece will perform.

#3: Scale & Balance

Make sure you are selecting furniture pieces that are appropriate for the space. Take everything into account including ceiling heights, natural daylight, columns, electrical outlets, flooring transitions & any architectural features that may play a part with how the space looks as a finished product. The goal is to create a balanced space that looks intentional taking every little detail into consideration. I love to incorporate different textures & mediums to create a multi-dimensional design that both functions well and is aesthetically pleasing. Also, make sure your space has good flow! It is so important to be able to comfortably maneuver throughout daily and leave room for change as the function of the space will most likely transition over time.

#4: Trust the Concept

Once you have an idea of the look & vibe you want to create, trust the concept! It is easy to fall off track and purchase shiny objects that catch your eye, but remember to keep coming back to the original plan & you will create the space you have always dreamed about without the regret of impulse buys or unnecessary filler pieces. Sometimes less is more when it comes to clutter, don’t be afraid of blank space! But also don’t hesitate to splurge on the pieces that will give you the highest performance providing longevity in your investment… you can easily determine which pieces will be worth the extra cash by circling back to the original concept of the look & feel you are trying to achieve.
